Considered one of the ” most beautiful villages in Italy ” Mazzo derives from “Matsch”, the original name of the ancient feudal family that settled in the Val Venosta during the twelfth century.

The center of Mazzo is located at the foot of the Alps and it is around a scenic square, which is caracterized from religious buildings and palaces that belonged to noble families that have written the history of Valtellina.

In the past Mazzo was the capital of one of the oldest church in the valley: this explains the abundance of stately architecture.

Among the most remarkable sights there are the castle of Pedenale , which has some ruins and the tower that now is a private residence and Lavizzari Palace , one of the oldest in the Valley.
